Jazz Festival headlines new American singer
Born in Philadelphia, Catherine Tuttle turned 18 this year and began her freshman year at Harvard in September. It’s her first time to be away from home and she’s looking forward to a great time majoring in Languages at Harvard.
Also, besides these major changes in Tuttle’s life, she just happened to sign up as the latest recording artist of Candid Records. She’s joins a distinguished list of artists that includes Mishka Adams, Jamie Cullum and Stacy Kent, among others.
Her first semester in college is just on its second month, and here she is in Manila for the first time, promoting her self-titled album. Her mother Lucie Daigle accompanied her—literally and musically—as she performed at Candid’s annual jazz festival at the Podium Mall in Mandaluyong City.
"I grew up surrounded by music," she told Life & Times. "Mom sings and plays the piano and guitar. My dad plays bass. They’ve performed with jazz and rock bands."
At the age of 7, she started taking classical piano lessons. "I hated studying classical piano, I just wanted to play songs. There’s a lot of studying to be done with classical," she laughed.
She was writing words and music at the age of 14 and at 16, her dad Richard decided to give her "studio time" to record her songs and created her very first album, titled Peel. Her songs were aired on the local stations of Philadelphia and not long after, Allan Fajardo of Candid Records encountered her recordings on the Internet, and as they say in show business, the rest is history.
"When we recorded her first album, we just wanted to give her the experience of recording—we didn’t really know where this would lead to," her mother recalled.
Tuttle told Life & Times that she likes writing songs about her life experiences. "That’s a lot to say, considering I’m just 18. You’re probably wondering what I’ve been through at such a young age. My songs are about relationships and about what I feel at certain moments of my life."
The album’s carrier single, "Alone," for instance isn’t actually about loneliness. "It sort of relates the feeling of being with someone yet you can’t find a way to communicate with that other person you’re with. It’s like there’s a barrier between the two of you," she explained.
The Tuttle ladies joined Mishka Adams, Mon David, Alegre Affinity, Isha, jazz pianist Ria Villena-Osorio and guests like jazz singer Sandra Lim during the launch of the Candid Jazz International festival at the Podium Mall on Monday afternoon. She describes her style as adult contemporary, very much in the tradition of Sarah Mclachlan.
Both mother and daughter are bewildered to be in Manila. "It all started with an e-mail from Allan, and here we are at the Podium!," exclaimed Catherine’s mother.
"We’re glad to be here at this time of the year," says Catherine. "It was starting to get chilly in Boston! And it’s so much fun to go shopping around here. Our hotel’s just across the mall. It’s also easy to make friends in Manila. Just last night, we met a few musicians at this mall. They were performing at a nearby bar. They’re so many musicians here!"
Catherine’s next agenda when she gets back to the States is to bury herself in college work. She’s focusing herself on the romantic languages, from French and Italian to Spanish. Asked why she chose to major in languages instead of the obvious music course, she replied, "No matter what happens, music will always be a part of my life. It will never leave me. So I chose something that was totally new to me. It gives me a chance to explore something that’s never been a part of me."

Mishka Adams surprises Awit Awards
IN THE RECENT CONCLUDED AWIT AWARDS, an unknown talent bested more recognized artists in the new female category. The surprise winner for the night was Mishka Adams, the 20-year old jazz singer that POPSICLE featured on Issue #43.
Mishka won over the fan favorite like Kitchie Nadal, Rachelle Ann Go, Frenchie Dy, and Marinel Santos for the Best Performance By A New Female Recording Artist award. The beautiful jazz singer, however, failed to make the awards night because she was in London performing at the prestigious Pizza Express Jazz Club.
The Candid Records artist held a sold-out concert in one of the most respected jazz clubs in the world. Artists like Norah Jones and Dianna Krall performed at The Express Jazz Club early in their careers. According to Candid Records’ Allan Fajardo, Mishka is the first Filipino to perform there.
Upon coming home, Mishka was already hounded with rumors, particularly regarding her citizenship. The young singer proudly claimed in Tagalog that she is a Filipino. In fact, the birth certificate of Mishka was circulating in the venue of the press conference, in case someone needed a hard copy.
“I’m shocked,” claimed Mishka when asked about her reaction to winning the award. “(I’m also) very thankful to shed some light on that jazz scene in Manila. So, (winning the award is) not only my success, but of my fellow jazz artists as well,” she added.
Mishka’s success continues as Candid Records will release her album in London this October, where the Awit Awards recipient will once again perform at The Pizza Express Jazz Club. Also the independent international jazz label, released a special edition of Mishka’s debut album God Bless the Child. The special edition contains four new tracks and the music video of the title track.

Child’s Play
Peter Quinn gets to the bottom of the story behind the signing of a new star in the making from the Philippines, Mishka Adams.
Question. What do the guitarist Cameron Pierre, the Philippines office of the British Council and the song ‘God Bless the Child’ have in common? Answer. They all had some part to play in the signing of Candid’d latest songbird, Mishka Adams.
The British-Filipina singer was snapped up by Candid Records, following a guest appearance at a British Council-sponsored “Jazz in Time” concert featuring none other than Courtney Pine. After a show-stealing performance of ‘God Bless the Child’, Allan Fajardo (MD of Candid Records Philippines) – there to see the label’s guitar ace Cameron Pierre – requested a demo. Mishka’s “video folio” was soon winging tis way to Candid CEO Alan Bates, courtesy of the British Council, and within two weeks Mishka was signing on the dotted line.
Which begs the question, did it all feel very sudden? “Well I’m coping alright so far! It is very sudden – I’m very surprised because I’m so young, I sometimes wonder if it’s really supposed to be happening to me now. But it’s a good thing here in the Philippines because not a lot of people are aware of the jazz community and it’s quite a minority in the music scene. Now that we’re getting a lot of young listeners it gives me the opportunity to open them up to everybody else as well.” That minority status looks set to be overturned by Mishka and whole crop of new talent – other Filipino jazz artists recently signed to Candid include the similarly youthful singers Isha and Enrique Marcos, plus the jazz quintet Affinity. Growing up in a fertile artistic environment, the 21-year-old Adams started to sing at the age of 13 when her mother (acclaimed Filipina sculptor Agnes Arellano) taught her folk songs. The singer’s interest in jazz came even earlier than that at the age of 10 when she started sax lessons – and she has her boarding school music teacher in England, apparently something of a dyed-in-the-wool jazz fan, to thank for nurturing this interest. Her infatuation with jazz continued into her teens when she joined a trio specializing in jazz standards at the school. Then, after finishing A levels, Adams returned to the Philippines to continue her musical studies at the University of the Philippines’ Diliman College of Music, majoring in saxophone. Since her return to Manila, Mishka has been creating a stir and turning heads on the local jazz scene, singing with Filipino acts such as Blue Echoes, Affinity and Pinikpikan in addition to performing solo gigs.
Soon finding herself nominated in three categories at the 18th Awit Awards (the Filipino equivalent of the Grammys), Mishka ended up walking away with ‘Best New Female Recording Artist’, which came as a “big surprise”(although perhaps not as big a surprise as it was for the platinum album selling pop singer Kitchie Nadal, who had been widely tipped to take the gong). Mishka received news of her success a night before her UK debut at Pizza Express at the end of May earlier this year. And how did she enjoy her Soho debut? “Interesting it was just a one-off showcase kind of thing before we do the album launch in September. We managed to invite a lot of friends. I was surprised to see the little cards that they put on the table to tell the audience members to be quiet – I’ve never seen that before! We’re used to playing in noisy places, so it was a new experience to play to such an attentive audience.” Making up part of this reverential gathering were several officials from the Philippine Embassy in London including the Ambassador himself – so no pressure there then!
The singer’s debut CD God Bless the Child (on which she also plays tenor sax and guitar) features 15 tracks, five of which she had a hand in writing. “Two of them I wrote myself and the other three I wrote with Sammy Asuncion. He’s a close family friend and he’s been teaching me guitar for a while. Usually he writes all the chord progressions and I deal with the melody and the lyrics as well, then we get together with the band to arrange everything.” My four-track album sampler features two standards, a resolutely upbeat take on Kaper and Washington’s “On Green Dolphin Street’ plus, naturally, the song that made it all happen for her – the album’s title track. Offering more of an insight into Mishka Adams the musicians, and potentially opening up the recording to a far wider audience than the jazz crowd, the two catchy originals ‘Where Do We Begin’ and ‘War of the Skies’ possess a candour and winning simplicity that augurs well for the future – it seems that her mother’s love of folk music and its emotional directness has certainly borne fruit! Communicating the song’s message appears uppermost in the singer’s mind. Other tracks on the album, I’m reliably informed, include ‘The Very Thought of You’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’.
The singer’s two arrangers on the album, Asuncion and Edgar Avenir, bring a fresh perspective to the material and Candid will doubtless be hoping to emulate the phenomenal crossover success of Jamie Cullum. UK jazz fans will be able to judge for themselves whether Mishka is another Cullum in the making when she launches her album as part of the forthcoming Candid Jazz Festival. With Alan Bates’ nose for future star-spotting, you wouldn’t like to bet against it.

Meet the Maharlika Singing Ambassadors
In town is an impressive group of young talents from the United Kingdom. It is called the Maharlika Singing Ambassadors and we had the chance to sample their own kind of music and showmanship when they performed at the Asilo de San Vicente de Paul last week.
The program, hosted by singer/songwriter Girl Valencia, started with the group’s beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace," followed by an opening/welcome speech by Allan Fajardo, general manager and managing director of Candid Records Philippines.
The members of the group, after performing "What a Wonderful World," a composition of Fredric Herrera, were interviewed individually and later performed with special guest Enrique Marcos another Fredic Herrera song "(I’ m Your) Friend" and with the Asilo de San Vicente de Paul children "Palimos Po/Pity on Me," composed by Vehnee Saturno. Before their finale number, "Sing a Song of Love," the Maharlika Singing Ambassadors also sang "Heal the World."
Before the musical program ended, a check for R100,000 was presented to Sr. Teresita Laguna, DC and Sr. Elisha Barranco, DC of the Asilo, by Allan Fajardo and Ms. Madelyn Richardson.
The Maharlika Singing Ambassadors, composed of Chelsea Alonzo, Charmaine Armitage, Jasmine Bird, James Michael Cruz, Stephanie Mingo, Ivette Chrisha Ramos, Chantal Richardson, Sarah Maguire and Nicole Villarin, came over to promote their debut album entitled "What a Wonderful World," under Zone 7/Candid Records. The inspirational album is earmarked to raise more funds and create awareness to Asilo de San Vicente de Paul’s current humanitarian projects.
The group was formed specifically to help reach out and raise funds for underprivileged children in the Philippines. The young and talented group (with ages range from 8 to 14) has performed on various fund-raising projects across UK and serves as the "ambassadors of hope and goodwill" among the Filipino community in England.
The group’s debut album "What a Wonderful World" features 16 inspirational songs from classic favorites including "Amazing Grace," "I Am But a Small Voice," "One Little Candle," "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Heal the World," "He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands," "Someone’s Waiting For You," "Best of Me and You," "I Believe" and "He Will Carry You" to beautiful originals written by Vehnee Saturno ("Children of the World" and "Pity One Me") and Fredric Herrera ("Sing a Song of Love," "I’m Your Friend," "I’ll Be There for You," and its carrier single, "What a Wonderful World!").
Allan Fajardo said "Our dedication to help the children of Asilo and support its projects including people in crisis and street children who were neglected, orphaned, abandoned, and who were deprived of the basic right for an education, drives our passion to organize this charity work on an annual basis. We are glad that every year, through our small efforts, we have been able to help various charitable organizations including Bantay Bata 153 and the Cancer Society of the Philippines."
Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, located along UN Ave., is also a halfway home for individuals and families in crisis situation. It also provides temporary shelter for street children and is also a healing home for the sexually abused. Aside from these, Asilo also conducts vocational short term training in livelihood skills.
In line with the recording company’s fund-raising project for the Asilo, Maharlika has been performing live in various SM branches and venues since their arrival last week. They’ve performed in SM Fairview, SM San Lazaro, SM Centerpoint, Enchanted Kingdom (yesterday and on Aug. 12). They are also scheduled to perform at the Holy Child Catholic School in Tondo (Aug. 7 at 7 a.m.), SM Pampanga (Aug. 9, 5 p.m.), SM Marilao (Aug. 10, 5 p.m.), SM Molino (Aug. 11, 5 p.m.), SM Batangas (Aug. 13, 5 p.m.), Office of the Ombudsman (Aug. 14, 7 a.m.), Apalit Municipal Hall Covered Court in Pampanga (Aug. 16, 4 p.m.), SM Pampanga (Aug. 17, 5 p.m.) and SM Baguio (Aug. 18, 5 p.m.).
Candid UK Managing Director Nieves Pascua–Bates, our kababayan from Asingan, Pangasinan, came over last month to finalize all these fund-raising activities of the Maharlika Singing Ambassadors. She said then that the Maharlika members (accompanied by their parents) are all excited and glad to share their time and talents in aid of other children less fortunate than themselves…"
By the way, Zone 7/Candid Records Phils. is now on its third year and is continuing its charity work with its pilot project "An Album with a Big Heart," which has stayed true to its main goal of not just to serve the needs of disadvantaged children but also to inspire people through songs and music to help and reach out to people in need.
"What a Wonderful World" is now avaialable only on CD in selected SM record bars released through Zone 7/Candid Records and distributed by Ivory Music and Video Inc.
Incidentally, Maharlika’s album tour is supported by Zagu and Enchanted Kingdom.

much ado about MISHKA ADAMS
The New Jazz Generation in 2005 has resulted to a multitude of young jazz singers who were dubbed as the next Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Usually on their pre-teens and early twenties, the names of Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum, Renee Olstead and Michael Bubble surfaced in the international music scene, clad with jazz standards as their main repertoire with fresh and new arrangements. The ‘jazz phenomenon’ swept the islands of the Philippines with albums occupying the Top 10 slot all over the metro.
But sadly, a Filipino has yet to produce one.
Alas, as if the heaven opened up and saw an angel whose name is ‘Mishka Adams’. It was a Courtney Pine’s concert that I’m supporting since his lead guitarist, Cameron Pierre, has an album under our independent label.
She has this innocent British look that would rival any foreign blooded models in the country but the moment she fluently utter ‘magkano to?’ in straight tagalog… my jaw dropped.
Dread locks (hope i spelled it right) has majestically crowned her shoulder length hair and quaint smile lights up her face.
The concert started. I was still outside of the venue selling the CD’s our company provides then I heard that old familiar song by the jazz minstrel Billie Holiday ‘God Bless The Child’. I am amaze with her vocal control – sensual yet groovy version, far from its original. I hurried to get inside the venue and I’ve seen the very same face who bought CD’s awhile ago.
Through Susan Arcega of The British Council, I ask her assistance if I could meet this wonderful angel. After a few more meetings with her step dad Billie Bonnevie (since she is still 17 or turning 18 by that time) and famed sculptress Agnes Arellano, we closed a multi-record deal spawning her highly acclaimed debut off from a memorable song that led her to a ‘shining new star’ – truly God bless the child.
And the rest, as what they always say, is history.
