Skarlet: The Lady in RED

September 23, 2007

Candid Records Philippines and Shangri-la Plaza Mall presents the launch of Skarlet’s debut album ‘The Powder Room Stories’ slated on February 23 (Friday) at The Grand Atrium of Shangri-la Plaza Mall at 6 in the evening. Best known for her spunky stage presence, stylish get-up and signature vocal flair, the enigmatic front woman of The Brownbeat AllStars Myra D. Ruaro re-emerges as SKARLET.

The voice behind the hit songs ‘Manila Girl’ and ‘My Boy Lollipop’ redefines the local jazz scene with its scintillating new image and powerful vocal prowess through her debut album aptly entitled ‘The Powder Room Stories’.

The 14 track CD which includes 10 original compositions and 4 covers, weaves stories of her journey through life and music. The album opens up with the self-titled song, ‘Skarlet’, as she reveals her true self in a spunky 30’s-inspired arrangement followed up by a mid tempo swing version of New Wave icon Debbie Harry - ‘Call Me’.

The highly sentimental ‘Lullaby for Ganei’ was stripped down to Aya Yuson’s guitar masterwork. Also ntoable is Edgar Avenir's swing arrangement "The way that you do”. Hank Hunter / Jack Keller’s ‘One Way Ticket To The Blues’ was rearranged by the mastery of Mr. Noli Aurillo.

The album also includes two rarities from the OPM archives - Ani Montano’s ‘Babae Ka’ and Francis Manglapus/ Freddie Kauffman’s ‘Im In Love With A Dream’. Other songs in the album includes Anguish, Myawong, Stay with me, Birdy Bop, Goodbye Ruby Jean, Joy and Words behind the tears.

Backed-up by some of the biggest names in the jazz scene today including young guitar virtuoso Aya Yuson, Simon Tan on upright bass, Koko Bermejo and Alex Fidel on drums, Joel Galang and Henry Katindig on piano and Ronald Tomas on tenor sax. Others who lend their talents on this much awaited jazz album of the year also includes master percussionist Bo Razon, Freddie Samson, Ronaldo Banaag, Ramon Mancio, Sherwin Valencia, Jekjek Cenidosa, Paul Tadeo, George Abundo, Roxy Modesto, Wynton Magsalin and Mei Tayengco.

Skarlet, joins the indie labels league of jazz stars which includes London International Jazz Competition Grand Winner MON DAVID, Awit Awards nominee Johnny Alegre AFFINITY and 2005 Best New Female Recording Artist (both for Awit and Aliw Awards) MISHKA ADAMS.

Skarlet’s ‘The Powder Room Stories’ is now available on compact disc on all music stores nationwide including Tower Records, Music One, Astroplus, Odyssey, New Radio City, and SM Record bars. A poster will be given for free for every purchase of the CD on the day of the event and will be autographed by Skarlet after the performance.
